It is an island… ..so the only way on and off the island is a beautiful and relaxing ferry boat ride, with tranquil views of Mt Rainier, the Cascades and Olympic Mountains – a great way to unwind and leave the stress of the mainland behind.
There are "auto/passenger" ferry boats (bicycles to 18 wheelers) that leave both the North and South ends of the island. The North End ferry is a 15 minute ride to West Seattle/Fauntleroy dock and to Southworth on the Kitsap Peninsula. The South End ferry is a 10 minute ride to Point Defiance near Tacoma. The “passenger only” boat offers easy access to downtown Seattle and is only a 35 minute ride.
Our "passenger only'' ferry is great for island commuters or for a day exploring Seattle . The ferry runs Monday through Friday out of Pier 52, but only during commuter hours.
The island has excellent commuter bus service. There is even a bus that boards the car ferry and takes you downtown in the morning and brings you back in the afternoon. For getting around the island, the bus runs Monday through Saturday, about once an hour. The bus stays mostly on the main highway, except one bus that goes to Dockton on Maury Island.
